Howler from the Arizona Coyotes hockey team was there to participate in a warm up dance with participants and posed for quite a few photos.
In addition to support for the event from the local community, many Alport syndrome families from across the country participated this year, traveling from California, Utah, Illinois, Minnesota, and Massachusetts.
“I just want to say thank you for your hospitality at the 5K. We had a great time at the race and Steve was really happy for the opportunity to talk to other people with Alport syndrome. I can tell that finding this community has really helped change his attitude and perception on life in a positive way. Everyone was so nice, we felt like we were home. We told John, Steve’s older brother that also has AS, about it and now he wishes he came. We’ve already decided that we are going to participate in next year’s race because it was such a great experience.” ~ Shena, IL
Individuals who donated or raised $100 or more were entered in a drawing for a $1,000 VISA gift card. The drawing was held on May 1. The winner was Michelle Emig, a graduate student at Arizona State University who walked in honor of Kim McKay who has Alport syndrome.
